Natural hair has made a comeback in recent times and a lot of people have jumped on the bandwagon. However, not everyone is brave enough to chop off all their hair and take on the natural hair path. Some people prefer to transition and let their relaxed or processed hair grown out until new natural hair is long enough to manage. For those in transition and still want to enjoy their hair, here are a few steps to assist you during your transition phase
1. Don’t set a time limit yet for yourself. Give your hair a few months to grow out to a point where you can be excited about it.
2.When you wash your hair, always detangle when the hair is still wet and slippery with conditioner using a wide toothed comb. Ensure to start at the end and work your way up to your roots.
3.Keep your scalp clean: ensure you clean your scalp every week or at least every two weeks.
4.Keep your hair moisturised: dry hair ultimately leads to breakage. Nothing moisturizes your hair better than water. However, you can also add your favorite natural hair moisturizer or hair oils. Olive oil, coconut oil or Shea butter is very healthy for the hair.
5.Reduce your heat usage: try air drying your hair styles sometimes. Ease up on the excessive use of heat on your hair to avoid burning your hair strands.
6.Take care of your edges: during your transition period, avoid making hair styles that put too much tension on your temples and nape. The hair there is always thinner, finer and more delicate.
7.The point where your natural texture meets your straight hair (it’s called the line of demarcation) is THE weakest part of your hair. Take your time when you detangle and style your hair.
8.Gradually cut the damaged ends off: Depending on the length you had to start with, get a good trim each month. Remember to use hair shears and not regular scissors!
