Foundation 101

Foundation is one step in your makeup routine that you really don’t want to mess up. Here are a few things you need to know before applying your foundation.

Hydrate your skin: The first thing to do before using your foundation is to cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate your skin for the best results. If your skin is flaking, peeling or oily, your foundation won’t go on smoothly.

Re-hydrate your skin: No matter your skin type, moisturizing before applying makeup is the key to an even looking application. Skip this step and your foundation could “cake up” in certain areas. For the best result, know your skin type and find a formula that compliments your skin type. Oil-free formulas are good for acne-prone or oily skin, and hydrating formulas are best for normal or dry skin.

Primer for a perfect correction: if you have scars or marks use primer to smooth out your complexion.  For people with spots, pimples and marks you should use primer to smoothen your complexion. There are different types of primer with the same aim to smoothen your complexion.

Concealer: You can use less foundation by adding concealer where needed and blending it well. It can be used for a few things like concealing dark spots and highlighting. You don’t always have to use a concealer, only use if necessary.

Trust your bronzer: Don’t worry about the season, bronzers can give you a beautiful glow any time. Use a larger bronzer or powder brush to sweep a small amount wherever the sun would hit naturally. So your forehead, around your cheekbones, down the centre of your nose and along the sides of your face. Again, be sure to blend well.
